Wind Storm

29 Apr

We had a pretty severe wind blow through here Sunday night. The local newspaper reports some people saying a small tornado came through and I might agree with that. I have a lot of limbs down in the yard as well of lots of loose debris that blew from behind the shop. My neighbor has 3 small trees down in his yard and the lean-to roof on his shop was blown loose and he had a full-size freezer on his carport that blew over.

I walked back to the gully and spotted this trunk split from the main tree. I had just looked at that tree a few days before and thought that tree is going to come down any time now.

I know it’s sort of hard to see, but just 100 feet away I spotted two more trunks split.

I had this tree completely broken off at the ground.

The only thing I discover wrong with our house is a piece of steel siding trim on the eave blew loose. I hope all of the shingles are OK. All in all it could have been a lot worse. But, we were safe and snug in our storm proof bedroom and we didn’t even hear a thing. Keep prepping everyone.

Ice Storm Damage

3 Feb

We went to Wally World this afternoon (Oh Joy!) and on the way we saw this huge pine tree that had been uprooted by the weight of the ice accumulated during last nights storm. I bet when the homeowner heard this tree fall and looked outside he said OH Shoot! (or something similar) But he should thank his lucky stars the tree fell in the direction it did, if it had fallen towards the house it could have done substantial damage and might have injured or killed someone. As it is, they will have a big mess to clean up in the near future. Keep prepping everyone because Ya neva know!

Safe Room Complete

26 Nov

Some of you will remember the master bedroom, bathroom, and closet are built with concrete walls and ceilings to be tornado proof. We formed the walls with the insulated Styrofoam forms and poured the concrete in the middle.

The walls are over 12 inches wide, with 6 inches of that being concrete and 6 inches being Styrofoam.

You might remember how ugly and industrial the doors looked at first, but now with decorative molding and a little paint they look much nicer.

The doors are made of heavy-duty steel with triple hinges and triple dead-bolt locks with a steel frame set into the concrete. This door has a full length mirror for Sweet Thing, I myself have no interest in seeing myself in a full length mirror, from the neck up is plenty.Nerd smile

Due to the building codes, all bedrooms must have an exit to the outside either through a door or a large window. Sweet Thing said an outside door in the bedroom made her feel uncomfortable and she would not be able to sleep there. So a window it is. That sort of defeated the idea of being a safe room so we had these wrought iron shutters made for the inside of the window. It has a crossbar in the middle but it can still be opened with one motion, per the code. That not only keeps the room storm proof but keeps it intruder safe as well.

Each shutter has 3 hinges attached with J-bolts set into the concrete wall. That should stop just about anything. I guess if an F-5 tornado picked up a piece of granite the size of a beach ball and hurled it directly into the shutters it might come through, but if there is a tornado outside I won’t be standing in front of the window, I’ll be hunkered down in the shower for ultimate protection. Getting closer!

Rain!

11 Jun

Well we finally got some rain,,,,except where I really needed it! We only got 2-3 tenths of an inch in that area.

This was a hard, driving rain with 50 MPH winds. I’m sure I’ll get some calls about hail damage in the morning.

Sweet Things parents had a big tree go down in their yard. Fortunately, it didn’t hit the house. We will go there in the morning with my chainsaw and trailer and clean it up. Well, I guess we just have to be thankful for what rain we did get.

Threatening Sky

19 Jul

We were out at the homestead last week as a storm front moved through, Sweet Thing snapped this photo of the threatening sky. We sure could have used some rain, unfortunately all we received out of this storm was wind and lightning. There have been several storm fronts come through this spring and early summer with damaging straight line winds. Luckily, we haven’t had many tornadoes in the area this year. We really could use a little rain now, forecast is hot and dry, typical July weather in Tennessee.
