Homestead Update 11/11/17

11 Nov

Fall finally arrived here at the homestead and the trees are starting to show their colors.

I planted an acre of greens in the back bottom right before we received an inch of rain and I got a tremendous emergence! I have more German Mustard, Florida Mustard, and Turnips than we could ever pick. Oh well, I am willing to share them with the deer and other wildlife.

I still have some flowers blooming in the wildflower garden, but I don’t know what they are. The flowers look like cosmos, but some of them are 8 feet tall! Hopefully, next Spring I will have a good emergence from the flowers I had this this Summer that went to seed. And yes, I know that bee hive is leaning badly, I will get out there and straighten it up today. Keep prepping everyone!

Homestead Update

The winter greens are really growing well, and the worms finally went away. Sweet Thing and her sister have been picking several Wal-Mart bags full every day.

One bag full of picked greens cook down into this one dish of cooked greens. We eat some for dinner, then freeze the rest for later.

This is my healthy dinner with okra and tomatoes, mustard greens, and great northern beans. All together that is only 2 WW Points Plus and I ate 2 servings for 4 total points and I was full and satisfied!

This is one of my next projects to finish, clearing out some of those trees and brush near the road. You can also see that pile of mulch waiting to be spread. I moved a few scoops of it last week, and when I scooped it with the front-end loader, you could see the steam rising from the pile. It has been there long enough to start composting! I am still waiting on the dump truck to bring some more dirt to add on top of my culvert, then I will cross over and start clearing a path through the woods. Always something to do on the homestead, keep prepping everyone!

Fall Garden

27 Sep

I went out to check my fall garden today and I wanted to post some pictures. The weatherman said it would rain last Friday and he was right for a change. I went out on Thursday and planted some seeds and we had a slow, all afternoon rain that totaled 1.25 inches, just perfect.

In the center row I set out 9 cabbages and 9 broccoli. This is my first try at growing broccoli, I just recently discovered I really like it! On the left side of the row I have a 4 foot wide strip of turnips and on the right of the row I have a 4 foot wide strip of mustard greens.

You can’t see it too well but I also planted about an acre of deer browse composed of wheat, oats, greens, clover and winter peas. All of it is coming up nicely.

I picked the last of the squash.

I still have several heirloom tomatoes still coming on.

I have some late cantaloupes growing over the outdoor cat enclosure. As you can see Kensey is helping me check out this one.

I had a good bit of purple hull peas mixed in with the sunflowers. I am going to let them dry on the vine then save the seeds for next year to see how they do. Sweet Thing already saved some tomato seeds and I am considering saving some of the squash and cantaloupes just to see if it can be done.

The cosmos are still blooming.

The sunflowers are dried up and the birds are really working them. As a matter of fact, the little yellow colored finches have stopped coming to my feeders, I think they like eating the seeds off of the heads better. How is your fall garden coming along?
