Homestead Update 8/6/2017

IMG_20170726_103202763

Things have been a bit slow around here as you might imagine when one is working 70 hours per week at my job. Our cotton is progressing nicely as evidenced by this large, grown boll. I haven’t seen any open bolls yet, but it won’t be long.

IMG_20170801_103546040

As I was out working, I encountered these buzzards roosting on an electrical tower. I was fairly close and they didn’t seem too concerned with me being so close. I hope seeing buzzards eyeing me closely is not a portend of things to come!

IMG_20170805_170956754_TOP

Sweet Thing and I went to a yard sale and I bought this Coleman cook stove for $10. The man said it had only been used once and I can believe it because it is so clean and shiny. I talked him into throwing in that electrical worker’s canvas tool bag for free. I’ve always wanted one of those even though I don’t know why!

IMG_20170727_170632291

I picked up another Native American artifact, this tiny arrow head. You can see how tiny it is in comparison to the button on my sleeve.

IMG_20170805_154126310

I hung some new flags in my barn storage area. Not much question where I stand is it?

IMG_20170629_172235511

There is a cemetery adjoining a field I check each week and I noticed this concrete armadillo on a grave stone. The stone had the man’s name and dates of birth and death along with the caption “Here rests the Armadillo.” I guess the man’s nick name must have been Armadillo.

IMG_20170629_172910701_HDR

Right beside the Armadillo was a gravestone marking where the ashes of this lady was buried. I’ve seen the ashes of people entombed in a mausoleum, kept in an urn in a home, or scattered in the sea, but I don’t recall ever seeing them buried. I see some interesting things in my daily travels. I don’t have any pictures, but my tomatoes and squash are doing well, and my okra is just starting to produce and my purple hull peas are blooming so my garden is doing fairly well considering how little time I have spent taking care of it. I went to a gun show last week and bought some reloading powder as well as some 22 LR. I haven’t seen any of that sitting on a shelf in several years. I guess we can thank President Trump for that. People must be feeling comfortable enough in our situation to slow down stocking up, but not me. I say buy now while you have the chance so when the next big shortage occurs so you won’t be caught unprepared. Keep prepping everyone!

WOW! Trump won! Racism??

12 Nov

van 2

The knucklehead pictured above is Van Jones, a political expert for CNN. Once he realized Trump was going to win the election, he was absolutely apoplectic! He went off on a rant how the only way Trump could win was “RACISM”. He said whites were afraid of the progress people of color had made in the last 30 years. He called this election a Whitelash! He claimed this was the election of the angry white man. Well, he is partially right, there are a lot of angry people out here, not just whites but middle-class blacks and Hispanics too, and we saw in Trump an opportunity to throw a brick through the window of the Washington establishment. What are we angry about? Well, let’s list some of the things we are tired of. We are tired of our health insurance premiums and deductibles going up through the roof. We are tired of politicians promising one thing during the election, then once they get to Washington, doing nothing they promised,  just sticking their snouts in the feeding trough and getting fat on our tax dollars. We are tired of the “Elites” looking down their noses at us “dirt people” here in middle America. We are tired of the Washington establishment, whether they are Democrat, Republican, Hollywood, Academia, or Main Stream Media telling us what is best for us, whether we like it or not. We are tired of not being able to even express our opinion without being labeled a racist and being totally ignored. We are tired of our schools being run from Washington, and being nothing but liberal indoctrination facilities. We are tired of having the LGBT agenda shoved in our face every day. We are tired of the Justice Department blatantly showing one set of rules for the Elites and another set of rules for the rest of us. We are tired of seeing the race agitators like Black Lives Matter rioting in or streets with impunity, until it is not safe to go to any large town or city. We are tired of our borders being an open door, inviting all sorts of undesirables such as drug dealers, gang members, common criminals, and terrorist. We are tired of the Border Patrol being ordered to “Catch and Release” thousands of suspected robbers, rapists, drug dealers and murderers back on the streets. We are tired of being told we must let in thousands of refugees from the Middle East even though we know there are going to be many jihadists in their number. We are tired of the ruinous trade deals that have benefited the big business globalist, but left the American workers broken and without jobs. We are tired of our taxes going up, just to see the money wasted on lazy slackers who refuse to work. We are tired of being told we have to spend billions of dollars fighting “Climate Change” even though we know that is a scam and the money is just going into the pockets of the Elites. We are tired of liberal judges legislating from the bench, totally ignoring the Constitution to promote their own liberal social agenda. We are tired of the EPA handing out ridiculous and onerous regulations such as declaring that practically all water, even rain water, belongs to the government and will be regulated. Whew! I’m just getting started on my rant! Did I miss anything? I can write pages on each of the things I mentioned above, and I can think of many more. So, yes, Van Jones, we are angry, we are really angry!  You might say Donald Trump was our way of saying “I’m mad as Hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Interesting times are coming my friends, and I am afraid it is likely to not be good. Keep prepping everyone!

Trump VS Hillary

5 Nov

103405133-Untitled-1.530x298

Well, we have come down to this. It is a sad state of affairs when these are the best two people we can come up with to be President. It’s like someone holding a pie pan full of cow manure in one hand and a pie pan of horse manure in the other. When they ask which pan do you want smeared in your face, most of us would say we don’t want EITHER smeared in our face. Well, that’s too bad, you are going to get one of the two whether you like it or not. So, if you don’t choose, someone else will choose for you. I voted for Trump, even though I don’t think he will be a great President but I know he will be 100 times better than Hillary. He might be a buffoon, but Hillary is just plain ruthless and EVIL. When she dies, they need to put a stake through her heart before they bury her! Anyway, I won’t try to sway you one way or another, just look at their positions on the issues and vote your conscience this Tuesday. Keep prepping everyone!

Colin Kaepernick Is A Disgrace

29 Aug

colin

I saw this knucklehead on TV this weekend and it made me mad as hell. Not only for what he was doing but also for the rest of the people putting this country down for all of our racism. I will admit there is still some racism, and I will admit some policemen go too far and rough up and even kill people unjustly. But if you look at it statistically, there are millions of interactions between police and citizens every day where where everything goes as it should. When I see Colin and all these Black Lives Matter types knocking our country for the horrible racism occurring it makes me want to scream. I recently saw a black congressman on TV saying he is ashamed of this country because of the way black people are treated and the fact he has to have “the talk” with his children. Really? You think this is a racial thing? I am as white as you can get. I mean, when I am naked I look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, but my parents had “the talk” with me when I was a teenager. My Mama told me if the Police tell me to do something, just do what they say and don’t argue and smartmouth them or they might shoot me. So I don’t consider it a racial thing, I just consider having “the talk” as an example of good parenting. If the police do something you don’t like, just keep your mouth shut while it is happening and the next day you can go and file a complaint. If you say “oh that is too much trouble” then the interaction was probably not as egregious as you pretended it to be. I certainly believe in working to make this country better and improving our situation. As a matter of fact, there are some things about this country I would like to change, but I am not going to refuse to show pride and honor our country. It is just a matter of common courtesy to be respectful to not only our Anthem but the Anthems of other countries. For example, at events where another country’s Anthem is played, you are not expected to face their flag and place your hand over your heart, but just stand there silently and respectfully to the other people. When you refuse to stand for our National Anthem, refuse to recite our Pledge Of Allegiance, or dishonor our flag, you are disrespecting each and every person who has served in military service in order to give you the right to do what you are doing. There are many ways to work to change things without disrespecting our country. If you think this country is so terrible due to racism, then take your azz out of here and go back to mother Africa or somewhere else where you think things are better. I don’t believe you can find anyplace better but if you do, simply renounce your citizenship and pack your bags, I will personally buy you a plane ticket to go there!  Good Grief!!!

Hillary Clinton Indictment?

27 Aug

USA/

And then they said “Hillary might be indicted after these e-mails come out”. Yeah, that would be their reaction to that statement. There is no way she would be indicted, all the crooks in Washington DC work to protect each other no matter what party they belong to or what crime they have committed. The higher up the food chain they are, the worse crimes they can get away with. Besides, the Clintons know too much dirt on everyone in DC. If they opened up their book of secrets and started naming names, the whole crooked bunch of them would be in prison. I grew up in south Arkansas, and Bill Clinton was Governor all of my adult life. Everyone knew what a couple of sleazy lowlifes they were, but Bill kept getting elected because he came across as such a likeable rogue. He is a consummate politician. I once shook his hand and introduced myself at an event we both attended. Two years later, we were on the same elevator at a hotel and he remembered my name and where we met. That is an amazing ability considering the fact he meets thousands of people and I was certainly a “little nobody” that he had no reason to remember. That is the type of ability a real politician possesses that can get him all the way to being President. Hillary possesses none of that likability. I know she will win this election by hook or crook, but in real life America, everyone I know despises her, even people who are Democrats. I think they should break off those states that vote Democrat year after year, and let them form their own country. Then the states that remain can form our own country. I think everyone would be a lot happier. I know I would. Keep prepping everyone!

Snake Bite!

8 May

IMG_1211

My sister was cleaning up some old firewood on the patio and she was bitten by a Copperhead! You can see the fang marks in the center of the circle by her little toe. She said she knew she needed to be careful and watch for snakes and spiders but this one got her anyway. She said the doctors didn’t give her any anti-venom. They told her the anti-venom could be as bad or worse than the bite itself. They are giving her intravenous antibiotics and meds to control the pain. I sure feel bad for her, get well soon, Sis!

IMG_20160418_113630696

Speaking of snakes, I was riding along a drainage canal when I looked over the edge and spotted this Moccasin curled up on a limb soaking up some sun.

IMG_20160418_113805990

I picked up a clod of dirt and threw it at him. I partially dislodged him from his perch and needless to say he was not pleased! He is coiled up in striking position flicking his tongue like a whip!

IMG_20160425_115240221

I have been going out in the fields checking on crops, and I found a new spot to look for Native American Artifacts. These are some bits and pieces of artifacts as well as some pottery shards, so I know I am searching in a good spot.

IMG_20160425_115632849

I found this nice, round smooth stone as I was searching. I can’t be sure it is an artifact, but it sure fits my hand well and could be very useful to a Native so I am hanging on to it.

IMG_20160505_162045742

I did find one decent piece so I am excited to come back and check this spot again. It is in a corn field so I will only have a few weeks before the corn becomes too big and hides the ground.

IMG_20160418_125204190

I wondered what might have attracted the natives to this spot so I looked around and sure enough I spotted this naturally occurring small river at the head of this field. Of course, modern men have cleaned all the trees and brush out of the channel for faster drainage, but it still would have been here 500 or more years ago to provide many of the things a primitive man would have needed. The river would provide water for drinking, cooking, bathing, as well as providing fish, frogs, turtles and act as an attractant for game animals and birds.

Just a quick update on Brandy. Here she is in her favorite spot, nestled up in the crook of my arm. She is making good progress on her biting control and house breaking. She might end up being a good dog after all. Keep prepping everyone! Get ready for Hillary 2016. Heaven help us all!

Homestead Update 2/21/2016

21 Feb

I am in a really bad mood as I sit here writing this post but I will get to that part in a few minutes.

IMG_20160217_101137851

I was visiting with one of my clients in his office this past week and his big handsome Sheppard was laying at my feet. I took this picture and sent it to Sweet Thing and asked if I could bring him home. She said NO! You already have two dogs. Yeah, but mine are not even remotely well behaved like this dog. I need to get busy trying to train mine I guess.

IMG_20160219_122221035

I also went downtown and early voted this week, and yes, I voted for Donald J Trump! I don’t think he can beat Hillary, but I am tired of voting for the lesser of two evils just because I think they might win. I want Donald to go to Washington and tear the whole system apart! We need to just burn the whole thing down and get back to the basics of the Constitution once again. I probably agree more with Ted Cruz than the others, but I know he has no real chance. His personality and appearance are just too off-putting for many people. I probably should have voted for Marco Rubio because he has a slight chance of actually beating Hillary in the general election. But I am ELATED Jeb Bush dropped out of the race. If he had been the Republican candidate I would have had a really hard time pulling that handle for him.

IMG_20160219_132211152_HDR

I managed to put together 10 swarm traps this week, and I even painted a few of them in a sort of camouflage design so they would be harder to spot hanging in a tree. Maybe then some YaHoo won’t see them and use the traps for target practice!

IMG_20160220_164413602

I can give a favorable review of the battery powered Porter Cable brad nailer. A fully charged battery will drive a lot of brads, and I mean it will fully sink these 2 inch brads into plywood and pine boards. I’m still not sure how well the brads will hold once the plywood starts to warp and buckle. Those 18 gauge brads are 2 inches long, but they are really thin. We shall just have to wait and see. Now on to the part putting me in a bad mood.

IMG_20160221_170652597

I bought this used Honda ATV for Sweet Thing to have for her exclusive use. I went to check it out prior to purchasing it and I was happy with what I saw. The only negative the owner could tell me was it had a gas leak when the engine was off, so he had to shut off the gas line after each use. I looked and decided that could be fixed so I bought it. It also needs some brake work, but that is something I can handle myself.

IMG_20160221_164521636

I decided the leak was coming from this spot on the old carburetor. That black knob is a fuel pump knob for use when the temperatures are extremely cold. I researched it on-line and discovered that part has a rubber seal that often goes bad after years of Ethanol gas. If you buy that knob as a OEM it would cost $51. Even buying it as aftermarket it costs $31. I bought that entire new carburetor for $57 and figured if that knob didn’t fix it I could replace the entire carb. Well, sure enough I replaced the knob and it still leaked. RATS!! What I hoped was a 10 minute job is back to a two hour job if I am lucky.

IMG_20160221_163217568

But what really upset me is I discovered two of my bee hives have died since last week. The temperature was 68 degrees today so I opened the hives to add some more dry sugar on top of the inner cover. As soon as I lifted the outer top I knew it was bad news. I pulled up this frame and all those bees are freshly dead. I guess they starved to death even though each hive had a deep super full of honey going into winter.

IMG_20160221_162932811

I opened the other hive and saw these bees also dead.

IMG_20160221_163212865

If you look closely you can see some hive beetles in that open section, but they are also dead! I took several more pictures to show to the old timers at my next bee keepers meeting to see if they have any ideas about what happened. Last week both hives were flying on warm days and I had no inkling that any thing was amiss, so I am really ticked off by this development. Oh well, that is all part of the learning experience. I still have two hives with live bees, and I gave them some dry sugar today so I hope they make it. That’s all for this week. Keep on prepping everyone!
