Water Storage

25 Jan

One of the most critical items for prepping is water storage. At our old house we used empty milk jugs for water storage. Sweet Thing said the milk jugs were so thin, they would spring a leak after a bit of time. She didn’t want to have leaking jugs in the pantry so I bought some water containers.

These are called Aqua-tainers, and can be bought at Wal-Mart, Tractor Supply, and many sporting goods stores. They are made of heavy-duty food grade plastic. They hold 7 gallons each so we have 14 gallons, enough to last the two of us 7 days. They cost about $17 each but they should last for years. The only down side with these containers is the weight. Water weighs 8.35 pounds per gallon, so each container weighs 58.45 pounds. That might be a little heavy for some women, children, and girly men. After I bought these I thought this might also be a way to store water for emergencies.

You can buy these 5 gallon bottles at many grocery stores, Wal-Mart, and Lowes. Even filled with water they only cost $14 dollars and should last a good long time. The only problem might be getting the water out of the jug. The dispenser designed to work with this jug costs $60, so I might just pour the water out into a smaller container to save money. These bottles also come in smaller sizes so that would be an option for those concerned about the weight.  Either way, you could do yourself a big favor by storing some water for emergencies. Be prepared!

We have several of the 6 gallon round containers for water storage. There is a pump you can get to use with those containers that works really well. It makes it possible to set one of the containers on the counter and dispense water without the constant lifting and pouring. You can also dispense from the container with it setting on the floor.

Jackie, thanks for stopping by. Where can you get one of those pumps? I was looking at the bottles at Lowe’s yesterday and discovered the smaller size bottles were 3 gallons, that would make pouring much easier. But I didn’t see any type of pump. I had already envisioned some type of syphoning device such as those made for wine and beer making as a way to get water out of the jug without picking it up.
