Rice Harvest 2012

16 Sep

Some of you may remember I don’t work any rice fields, but the harvest is well underway this year.

This is a picture of the same field I posted a picture from earlier in the summer. It is ripe and ready for harvest.

The heads are full and hanging over.

This is what your white rice looks like before it is harvested.

You may remember I don’t work rice because there are lots of things I don’t like about rice. Well, this is another thing I don’t like. Many times, if you are unfortunate, you rice will “go down”. The heads are heavy and full, and if you get a bad weather event, such as Hurricane Isaac dropping 2 inches of rain and getting 3 days of 25 MPH winds, the rice will fall over. It looks like someone ran over it with a roller and mashed it flat to the ground. The rice can still be harvested, but the equipment has to move very slowly and carefully to cut the rice. Even then much will be lost due to damage and spoilage. The only rice I want to see is on my dinner plate.
