Harvest 2012

10 Sep

Well, the harvest season for 2012 is under way. It appears the yields are going to be a mixed bag this year.

The corn harvest is almost complete, and I am hearing yields from my farmers of 40 bushels up to 240 bushels. The prices they are getting are at record highs so this should turn out to be an excellent year for most irrigated corn.  The dryland fields suffered greatly due to the extreme drought.

Saw a lot of dust devils like this one during the summer.

The soybean harvest is also a mixed bag, the irrigated yields are in the 70 bushel range, and the dryland yields are 5-40 bushels. Again we are getting record prices so that helps take away some of the sting of the lower yields.

The cotton harvest should begin next week. We have some fields defoliated and getting close to being ready to pick. I expect the irrigated yields to be very good and the dryland yields to be poor to below average. I am looking forward to this harvest season being over so I can spend less time working and spend more time at the new homestead!
